BREAKING: Dallas Stars Acquire Chris Tanev From Flames

The Chris Tanev sweepstakes have finally come to a close.

According to an announcement from the team, the Dallas Stars have acquired defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames and goaltender Cole Brady from the New Jersey Devils.

In return, the Stars are sending defensive prospect Artyom Grushnikov, a 2024 second-round pick, and a conditional 2026 third-round pick to Calgary.

Additionally, Dallas has traded a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Devils as part of the agreement, with New Jersey agreeing to retain 50% of Tanev's salary for the rest of the 2023-24 season.

This season, the last of his four-year deal worth $18 million with the Flames, Tanev has one goal, 14 total points, a +16 plus/minus rating, and 171 blocked shots across 56 games played.

His 171 blocked shots currently ranks second in the league.

Tanev was perhaps the most coveted piece in the trade market these past few months, with the Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, and several other teams showing interest in the veteran.

Grushnikov was the Stars' second-round pick (48th overall) in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. This season, with the Stars' AHL affiliate, the 20-year-old defenseman has one goal, five total points, and a +3 plus/minus rating across 44 games played.

Flames' General Manager Craig Conroy had high praise for Grushnikov: “Artem is a player our organization has identified, for some time now, as being a strong addition to our prospects pool. We are excited to acquire a player with Artem’s qualities and look forward to his contributions to the Flames success for a long time."

The Stars also acquired Cole Brady from the Devils in the deal.

Brady previously serving in a backup capacity at the University of Massachusetts, joined the Devils organization after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 NHL Draft.

Currently, in his fourth season in the NCAA, Brady has played 46 games for both Massachusetts and Arizona State. He has amassed a record of 16 wins, 18 losses, and 4 ties, with a save percentage of .902.

The addition of Tanev adds to the already formidable roster of the Stars, who are currently tied with the Winnipeg Jets for the Central Division lead, holding a 35-17-9 record over 61 games played.
