Insider: Canadiens Confirmed Interested in Trevor Zegras

If the Anaheim Ducks are truly ready to part with dynamic youngster Trevor Zegras, it appears that the Montreal Canadiens' interest in the 22-year-old is real, according to TSN's NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun. He breaks down exactly how Zegras talks are unfolding in Anaheim:

The Ducks are listening on Trevor Zegras. My understanding is that they haven't phoned a single team and brought up his name. This is other teams, picking up the phone and saying 'what's going on here?' (But) the Ducks haven't hung up. They haven't said 'how dare you?' And I will tell you that of the four or five teams that have called them, the Montréal Canadiens are one of them. That is true, and why wouldn't they?

Zegras signed a three-year, $17.25 million extension with Anaheim last fall. It's rumored, however, that talks got "nasty". He was moved from center to the wing this season, further indicating an inclination that the Ducks could feel he's not a fit for them going forward.

Zegras is out at the moment with a broken ankle, but he could be back shortly after the trade deadline, and in Montreal's case anyway, they wouldn't be acquiring him for any sort of playoff push.

As for the chances of a trade... If it doesn't happen now before March 8th, it's certainly expected to be a high possibility after the season. "I don't know that many people believe that Trevor Zegras meshes with the ultimate view of how (GM) Pat Verbeek wants to see the Anaheim Ducks play," said NHL Insider Frank Seravalli recently.

This year, the former No. 9 overall selection in the 2019 NHL Draft is having an injury-plagued, disappointing season with just four goals and seven points in 20 games played. This follows back-to-back 23-goal outings in his first two full NHL seasons.
