Insider Confirms Oilers' Plans For Broberg

The Edmonton Oilers are going to go for it this season, it's just a matter of time until they make a deal. It is likely they are just waiting for the right player to become fully available or to see exactly what they need to address. Either way, insider Elliotte Friedman confirms that the Oilers will not trade prospect Philip Broberg in order to upgrade for a rental.

The Oilers are in a window where they can win, but I fully believe that Broberg is an opportunity away from being a big part of the team for a long time and making a difference. He is only 22, so there is a bit too much expectation on him. He is still exempt from waivers, so why not fully utilize his development and have him play top minutes while dominating at the AHL level before calling him up permanently?

A top prospect like Broberg is far too high of a price to pay for a rental as even the highest expected rental at the deadline this season, Elias Lindholm, went for a first and a 19-year-old prospect that is still in the OHL. It would take a deal somewhat like the one the Oilers made to acquire a player like Mattias Ekholm for them to even consider moving on from Broberg. If something happens and the Oilers lose this season, that is a former eighth overall pick that is NHL-ready gone for someone who will also leave in the offseason.

At least if the Oilers make a deal for a player with term and have to move Broberg in that trade, Edmonton gets the likely very good player for multiple Stanley Cup runs and it isn't a total waste. We will see what happens since the Oilers are linked to rentals and players with term ahead of the trade deadline this season. It is highly likely their first will be moved, but anything else after that remains to be seen.
