Maple Leafs Get Goalie Back From Injury

After getting injured at the start of December and spending over 2.5 months on the LTIR, Joseph Woll was able to return and go on a conditioning stint with the Toronto Marlies. That just ended as he was recalled to the Maple Leafs and is set to return to action in the NHL.

Woll hasn't been activated off of the LTIR just yet, but should soon. The Maple Leafs have two open roster spots and would be able to fit his cap back in right now. The problem that arises is that the team would be running with three goaltenders, Ilya Samsonov, Woll, and Martin Jones.

Woll got injured when he was the clear starter for the team. During that time, Samsonov went through the worst stretch of his career, was sent down, recalled, and is now playing much better hockey, and Jones came in clutch for the team and was the starter for a while. If there are three healthy goalies, it is not a great strategy to hold three on the roster. This should see a trade or demotion soon.

The hesitation to make a move should be because the way Jones has played, he will be claimed if he is put through waivers. At this point, he is the goaltender who is the odd man out, but he is fully capable of adding value to a team ahead of the deadline. The Maple Leafs are likely going to be running with who is hot between Samsonov and Woll for the rest of the season.
