NHL Player Safety Announces Its Punishment For Maple Leafs' Morgan Rielly

The eagerly-awaited decision from NHL Player Safety is in, on the cross-check heard 'round the league. And Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly will be receiving a five-game suspension for his check to the head of Ridley Greig of the Ottawa Senators.

The incident took place as the game Saturday night was in the final seconds, and Greig wound up in front of the crease and blasted a slap shot home into the Leafs' empty net, prompting Rielly to immediately go after him.

Rielly will be appealing the suspension.

The Leafs lose their top defenseman for a critical stretch of games, as they struggle to hold on to a playoff spot. They're one point back of the Tampa Bay Lightning for 3rd in the Atlantic Division, and sit tied for the two Wild Card spots with the Detroit Red Wings, four points up on the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders.

Rielly has 43 points in 50 games this season while playing over 24 minutes a game on the often-beleaguered Leafs blueline.
