NHL Trade Rumors: Dallas Stars & Calgary Flames Proposed Trade
The Calgary Flames are expected to be sellers ahead of the March 8 deadline and what they're offering, the Dallas Stars could be buying. Look for the Stars to make a run at acquiring RHD Chris Tanev ahead of the deadline.
Tanev is one of the best defensive defenseman available on the trade market and has been discussed at lengths this season. He's a hard-nosed d-man who loves to sacrifice his body and does whatever it takes to help the team win. Ask anyone in Calgary and they'll tell you Tanev's the best teammate they've ever had. He's the prototypical 'team guy' who expects the same effort from everyone in the dressing room.
The Toronto, ON native has been on the trade market for most of the season and with the Flames now sitting five points out of a playoff spot, look for teams like the Stars to up the ante and apply some pressure on Flames GM Craig Conroy.
Conroy is asking for at least a second-round pick for Tanev, however due to the high interest level, expect to see a couple of other pieces involved, such as another late conditional draft pick and a mid-level prospect. Quantity over quality likely in this case.
Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff recently discussed the potential of Tanev being dealt to the Stars and had this to say:
It’s still hard to see Nill going through the deadline and doing nothing and Tanev would be an ideal upgrade over Nils Lundkvist. The Stars rank 22nd in the league in blocked shots per 60 minutes (14.93) and Tanev is second in the league (151) in that category. He is a human missile on the ice, launching himself in front of pucks. We did a deep dive on Tanev’s game and he is still really efficient with the puck on his stick, too, as someone who doesn’t overcomplicate things. It’s also not an overly complicated transaction as Dallas has been banking cap space and may be able to afford Tanev without retention. The Flames are believed to have a second-round pick on the table already, but Dallas might present one of the true reasonable cases on a conditional pick to actually come through and go on a deep run to enhance the return.
While it's unknown where exactly Tanev will be playing after March 8, one things for sure, it won't be in Calgary.
