NHLTR Mock Trade: Calgary Flames Deal Chris Tanev to the Dallas Stars

Our mock trade series continues after looking at potential deals involving Jake Guentzel of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Noah Hanifin of the Calgary Flames. For today's piece we stay in Calgary and showcase Hanifin's teammate, and sometimes defense partner, Chris Tanev.

Tanev is as tough as they come. He's battled tested, he blocks shots with his face on a regular basis, he can make the first pass and is more offensively minded than he's given credit for. And he just so happens to be in the top three trade targets on all the insider's trade boards. Tanev's getting moved before March 8 and here's something to consider before the deadline.

NHL Mock Trade: Tanev dealt (50% retained salary) to the Dallas Stars for 2024 second-round pick & Nils Lundkvist

Ideally, Flames GM Craig Conroy lands a first-round pick for Tanev, which honestly would be a significant acquisition price for a shutdown defenseman who has recorded 12 points in 52 games. A second rounder and Lundqvist gives Calgary a young defenseman with some offensive upside in Lundkvist and an asset for the spring as Conroy is looking to rebuild/retool on the fly. The former first-round pick is having a career season in Dallas and could be given a ton of minutes in Calgary down the stretch.

Tanev gives Dallas a second-pair option and someone who can help their penalty kill. The Stars kill ranks ninth in the league and with Tanev doing whatever he can to block shots, it could become a lethal weapon. Retaining salary here is important because the Stars want to win the Stanley Cup this season and won't have much room for anyone else if Tanev eats all their deadline cap space.
