Oilers Rumors: 2 New Suitors Emerge for Philip Broberg

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg has been in the rumor mill for a significant portion of the 2023-24 season. While a move has not come to fruition at this juncture, it is quite possible that this will change shortly, with the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline almost here.

Interest in Broberg has been there for much of this season, with teams like the Anaheim Ducks, Philadelphia Flyers, and Columbus Blue Jackets being connected to him. Yet, it appears that the young defenseman has two new suitors, as The Fourth Period reported that the Calgary Flames and Pittsburgh Penguins are now eyeing him.

The Flames certainly could use a young defenseman like Broberg. They traded Nikita Zadorov earlier this season, and both Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin are expected to be dealt before the trade deadline passes. As a result, bringing in a young defenseman with upside like Broberg is a gamble worth taking for the Flames. However, with Edmonton being one of their rivals, they may not be very interested in dealing him to Calgary.

As for the Penguins, they are also in a position to take a shot on Broberg. Their defensive group has struggled this season, and it has been a reason for their disappointing campaign. As a result, bringing in Broberg, a defenseman with good upside, could be beneficial for them. With that, a move to the Pens would likely give Broberg more consistent playing time at the NHL level.

We will need to wait and see if the Penguins or Flames end up landing Broberg before the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline passes from here.
