Top 3 RD On The Board After Chris Tanev Trade
The Chris Tanev trade might have set the table for a number of other defensive moves as we are just about a week before the 2024 trade deadline. Right-shot defensemen are usually fairly hard to come by and many believed that Tanev was the best available this season. With him off the board, let's take a look at the next three best options teams have if they want to upgrade the right side ahead of the deadline this season.
Sean Walker
The Philadelphia Flyers are likely going to trade Sean Walker this season as the two sides don't appear to be close on a number for an extension. While he could be used as their own rental and the team has injuries, he will fetch a good return, especially being what many teams think is the best option available if they want to upgrade the right side with a rental this season. He has six goals and 22 points in 60 games and is a strong two-way defender capable of playing top-four minutes.
Matt Dumba
The Arizona Coyotes appear to be expecting more in return for Matt Dumba than they are going to receive. He is not going to go for a first-round pick unless a team gets very very desperate. He is nowhere close to the level he was at in his early 20s and you can't expect much offense from him anymore. While Dumba can play top-four minutes and is physical, his execution with the puck can be good or bad. He is on an expiring contract and the Coyotes will have to eat some of his $3.9 million AAV cap hit if they want to move him. I think he gets traded, but much closer to the deadline after a couple more pieces have been moved on the back-end around the league.
Alexandre Carrier
Alexandre Carrier is a well-rounded defenseman that should be available from the Nashville Predators this season. The team sold last season in the midst of a playoff race and could very well do so again. The Predators won't trade Juuse Saros while in a playoff spot, but didn't say anything about Carrier. He provides secondary scoring and is strong in his own end and on the penalty kill. His $2.5 million AAV cap hit will be attractive to teams.
