Washington Capitals Place Forward On Waivers
The Washington Capitals have made a roster move, as they have placed forward Matthew Phillips on waivers.
Phillips, 25, signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Capitals during the offseason after the Calgary Flames let him walk into free agency. Following signing with the Capitals, Phillips made their NHL roster out of training camp. He started the 2023-24 season off with a bang, posting a goal and two assists in his first four games.
Yet, Phillips' hot start did not last too long, as he has just two points over his last 23 games. His playing time with the Capitals also has been significantly dropped as the year has progressed. He only appeared in two games for the Capitals in January and has made one appearance for them this month.
While Phillips has struggled with the Capitals, there is a chance that another team will take a chance on him. He has shown that he can produce a lot of offense at the AHL level, and teams in need of some secondary scoring could claim him because of it.
In other waiver news, the Vegas Golden Knights have placed forward Marcus Kallionkieli on unconditional waivers for the purposes of contract termination. The Golden Knight selected him with the 139th pick of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
