Capitals Trade Rumors: 3 Teams Circling on Joel Edmundson — Favorite Emerging

One of the biggest defensemen still on the trade market—in size,  at least—is Washington Capitals' hard-hitting Joel Edmundson. A report from TSN insider Darren Dreger this morning has at least three teams in the hunt, with one taking the inside track.

Dreger lists the Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins as prominent in the Edmundson bidding, with the Bruins seeming to be the frontrunner as of now.

Toronto has already added one sizeable D-man in Ilya Lyubushkin, but could certainly use another to help re-shape their blueline.

The 6'5", 220-pound Edmundson's specialty is clearing opponents from the front of his net.

A Stanley Cup champion from his time with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, he actually has a lengthy and impressive playoff resume, with 75 games of postseason experience while racking up an eye-popping 168 hits and blocking 103 shots. He also has a plus/minus rating in the playoffs of plus-7.

This season with the Capitals, the 30-year-old veteran has six points in 44 games in about 16 1/2 minutes per night.

Edmundson carries a relatively light $1.75 million cap hit, so it should be doable for any of these contenders. He'll add a huge playoff presence for whichever Atlantic Division (or other) team he winds up with.
