Devils Rumors: 3 Contract Extension Candidates

The 2024 NHL Trade Deadline saw several teams make moves, and the league looks far different now because of it. However, now that the deadline has passed, we won’t see any more trades until after the season. Although this is the case, we still could see teams sign players to contract extensions. As a result, we here at NHLTR will be going over three contract extension candidates from each team.

In this latest edition of the series, we will be focusing on the New Jersey Devils.

Dawson Mercer: Dawson Mercer's entry-level contract is coming to an end at the completion of this season. The pending RFA is due for a significant raise, as he has become a significant part of the Devils' lineup. Whether he ends up getting a bridge deal or long-term contract, an extension is surely coming his way.

Nolan Foote: Nolan Foote is another young forward who is on an expiring contract. The former first-round pick has yet to emerge as a full-time NHL player, but he has the potential to change that. Because of his upside, he should be able to land a new contract from the Devils, whether that is before the end of the season or during the summer.

Brendan Smith: Brendan Smith is a veteran defenseman who the Devils could look to keep around beyond this season. He is a decent depth player to have, as he provides plenty of grit and offers great versatility. Thus, he could get a cheap deal from the Devils to stay put.
