Devils Rumors: New Trade Offer Made for Flames' Jacob Markstrom
After the deal was off the table thanks to the Calgary Flames not wanting to retain salary, trade talks are now ongoing and the New Jersey Devils have made another push to acquire Jacob Markstrom.
The Devils are reportedly now open to taking on Markstrom without having Flames GM Craig Conroy retain any salary moving forward. The veteran netminder is signed for two more seasons at $6 million and this was a breaking point in talks two weeks ago. The Flames approached Markstrom and he agreed to waive his no-movement clause to join the Devils, all to have the talks blow up in his face.
Markstrom's made it very clear he's not happy with how Conroy's been handling the situation and has voiced his frustration to the media and to management. A trade seems very likely now before March 8.
As for the Devils, they are rumored to be offering Akira Schmid, and would like to keep both Dawson Mercer and Alexander Holtz, however the Flames are believed to be willing to do the deal only if one of those two young forwards are included.
Markstrom is 21-15-2 on the season and has a .914 Sv.% and 2.57 GAA. New Jersey sits with the 7th worst goals against per game in the NHL and will have a hard time making the playoffs if they can't find some consistent goaltending.
Elliotte Friedman gives a little context on Jacob Markstrom's comments from yesterday and on the New Jersey Devils continued interest in the Flames goaltender.
