NHL Rumors: Oilers Making Trade Calls on Devils' Tyler Toffoli

The Edmonton Oilers are looking for a top-six winger to compliment their group and it turns out they could wind up acquiring an old rival. There's a ton of speculation brewing that GM Ken Holland has reached out to New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald regarding veteran winger Tyler Toffoli.

Toffoli, 31, is a pending unrestricted free agent and someone the Devils are getting a ton of calls on. New Jersey sits five points out of a divisional playoff spot and six points out of a wild card spot, so any move Fitzgerald makes has to be calculated and consider both this season and the future.

Toffoli has recorded 25 goals in 58 games this season and has a decorated resume with includes a Stanley Cup and 44 points in 88 postseason games. He spent eight seasons with the LA Kings and a year and a half with the Calgary Flames, so the Oilers are very familiar with his game.

Toffoli doesn't hold any trade protection and can be moved at will. Fitzgerald won't be giving him away for draft picks so if any move does materialize, look for the Devils to receive NHL ready talent who can be inserted into the Devils lineup immediately. It's going to take a significant offer to get Fitzgerald to bite, that's for sure.

The Oilers will have some competition to land the veteran winger as it's being reported the Kings wouldn't mind a reunion. David Pagnotta confirmed the Kings' interest earlier this week as trade talks are heating up in a major way all over the NHL.
