Philadelphia Flyers' 3 Worst Contracts of 2023-24
The Philadelphia Flyers have had a very surprising season as John Tortorella's antics and coaching style has had this team in contention all season. With all of the odds moves made, there are a number of contracts that aren't ideal on the Flyers.
Cam Atkinson
Tortorella hasn't been impressed with the play of Cam Atkinson lately and has made him a healthy scratch. This is a veteran that has had many good seasons in the NHL, but hasn't been up to par offensively, especially as of late. He has 13 goals and 28 points in 63 games, but has the worst plus/minus on the team at -22. He is nearly 35 years old, but that doesn't negate the fact that he has a $5.875 million AAV cap hit through next season.
Rasmus Ristolainen
When the Flyers extended Rasmus Ristolainen to a five-year, $5.1 million AAV deal, it was questioned immediately. He was a completely different type of defender in his younger days as a top power play defenseman who plays a ton. On the Flyers, he hasn't shown much offense at all and his overall game hasn't been great. This season his role has not been large and he hasn't had a positive impact on the squad, getting into 31 games, scoring one goal and four points, all while only averaging 16:41 per game. This is a contract the Flyers wish would end sooner than 2027.
Sean Couturier
Sean Couturier was scratched a couple of games a month after being named captain because his play has been pretty poor. The Flyers got 3/4 points in the games he was out, so while you can argue with Tortorella's antics, they have worked to get this team where it is. It is tough missing an entire season and more like Couturier did before this season, but he is still getting paid $7.75 million AAV until the end of 2030 regardless. He has 11 goals and 36 points in 67 games while now playing on the fourth line. The veteran has also only scored one goal in his past 30 games, which just can't happen. Fortunately the Flyers are still technically trying to rebuild and the contract isn't a burden on them yet.
