Rangers Sign Connor Mackey to Contract Extension

The New York Rangers are keeping one of their depth defensemen around, as the Blueshirts have signed Connor Mackey to a two-year contract extension. It is a two-way contract, and Mackey will carry a $775,000 cap hit at the NHL level.

Mackey, 27, has spent the majority of the 2023-24 season down in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Hartford Wolf Pack. In 36 games on the campaign thus far, he has two goals, 11 points, 62 penalty minutes, and a plus-13 rating. Overall, has been a solid veteran defenseman for the Wolf Pack, so it makes sense that they are keeping him around past this season.

Mackey also played in one game with the Rangers earlier this season against the Ottawa Senators on January 27, where he sported a plus-1 rating in 16:27 of ice time. While he has not gotten too many chances at the NHL level this season, he will surely continue to be a decent call-up option for when injuries arise.

Overall, there is no risk in the Rangers signing Mackey to this two-year extension. He will continue to be a solid part of their AHL team's roster and serve as a mentor for the club's prospects.

In 40 career NHL games split between the Calgary Flames, Arizona Coyotes, and Rangers, Mackey has four goals, 11 points, and 75 penalty minutes.
