Sharks Rumors: Trade Offers Being Discussed on Granlund & Ferraro
The San Jose Sharks have a number of pending free agents who are involved in trade talks as Sharks' GM Mike Grier looks to cash in on his assets, however there's been some development on a couple of Sharks players who are under contract for next season and beyond.
Mikael Granlund and Mario Ferraro are two players who onlooking teams have reached out to the Sharks about and are now very much in play. Elliotte Friedman via 32 Thoughts commented on the Sharks trade preview and had this to say about what's going on in San Jose:
The Sharks and Blackhawks are all but guaranteed to be one-two in the draft lottery, with Anaheim 11 points ahead of San Jose and 12 atop Chicago. The Sharks have been open for a business for a while. It had been quiet around them, but they are trying to move as many of their seven UFAs — six forwards and Kaapo Kahkonen — as possible. There’s been talk about players with more term (Mario Ferraro and Mikael Granlund), but that’s a costlier price.
Ferraro is a shut-down blueliner who will be coveted by a number of playoff bound clubs. He's a shot-blocking wizard who isn't shy to sacrifice his body for team success. Ferarro's chipped in with one goal and 14 points in 56 games so far this season and has two seasons left on his contract at $3.25 million AAV. The 25-year-old defenseman does not hold any trade protection and can be moved at will.
Granlund on the other hand is no stranger to trade talks as he's been dealt three times throughout his career. So far in his first season with the Sharks, the 32-year-old versatile forward has recorded eight goals and 28 assists in 47 games. Granlund is owed $5 million AAV this season and next and also doesn't have any trade protection. The New York Rangers, Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights are looking for help up front, so too are the Nashville Predators where Granlund spent parts of five seasons.
The Sharks are lottery bound and at least five years away from being a playoff team, Grier would be smart to continue rebuilding and cashing in on as much as possible this season.
