Trade: Oilers Bring In Right-Side D Depth In Deal With Coyotes

The Edmonton Oilers aren't done dealing yet, after a big day on Wednesday. They've now added some depth for the blueline, bringing in Troy Stecher in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes.

The Oilers send a 4th-rounder to the desert, in return for Stecher and a 7th-rounder.

The 29-year-old just returned a little over a week ago after a five-week absence due to a lower-body injury, but has been back for five games.

This marks the second straight year the Yotes have dealt Stecher at the trade deadline, after sending him to the Calgary Flames last year at this time.

The Coyotes brought him back on a one-year, $1.1 million contract this summer for a reunion that lasted less than a year.

He's played an even bigger role on the Arizona blueline this season, with 18:26 of ice time per night, his most in five years. Stecher has one goal and five assists in 47 games.

Oilers GM Ken Holland had told the media this week that he was looking at adding a No. 7 defenseman before Friday’s deadline, and Stecher would seem to be it.

In addition, he provides depth from the right-side for the Edmonton blueline, as they already have Philip Broberg and Ben Gleason as depth from the left side.

The Vancouver Canucks originally signed Stecher as an undrafted free agent out of the University of North Dakota back in 2016. He played four years in BC before signing with the Detroit Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
