Washington Capitals Extend Rasmus Sandin
GIMME FIVE, SANDMAN‼️
— Washington Capitals (@Capitals) March 6, 2024
The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Rasmus Sandin to a five-year contract extension. Sandin’s contract will carry an average annual value of $4.6 million.#ALLCAPS
The Capitals were able to acquire Sandin last season at the trade deadline for a first-round pick from the Toronto Maple Leafs, taking advantage of how many defensemen they had and bringing in a now 23-year-old defender who has fit right into the top-four in Washington.
With LD Dmitry Orlov being dealt last season and Joel Edmundson likely to be moved this season, the Capitals did well to lock in their future on the left side. Sandin has three goals and 20 points in 52 games this season while logging over 21 minutes a night, but we saw just how dominant he could be offensively last season when John Carlson was injured and Sandin was given the reins. He recorded three goals and 15 points in 19 games in 2023-24 for the Capitals.
There may be a passing of the torch pretty soon, but the Capitals have not only done well with awarding Sandin with a nice contract based on his work in Washington, but it projects to be a great deal by the end of it in 2029.
