Podkolzin, 22, spent the majority of this regular season down in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks. In 44 games played, the 6-foot-1 winger had 15 goals to go along with 28 points. At the NHL level with the Canucks, he has had a quiet year, posting just two assists in 18 games. However, due to his solid play at the AHL level, he earned a spot back on Vancouver's roster.
Podkolzin was selected with the 10th overall pick of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The Canucks are hoping that the former top prospect can take a big step forward during his contract extension. There's no question that he has the tools to become an impactful NHL player, and he is still quite young enough where he can improve his game.
Overall, there is a low-risk move for the Canucks. Podkolzin will have an easily affordable $1 million AAV starting next season, and this deal could age quite nicely if he produces more offensively with the club from here.
