The Finnish winger, selected second overall by the New York Rangers in the 2019 NHL Draft, has displayed flashes of brilliance but struggled with consistency in New York.

This season, Kakko tallied 13 goals and 19 points in 61 games, with his offensive production not meeting expectations for yet another season.

However, his strong defensive play has made him an attractive target for teams like the Hurricanes, who value a robust two-way game.

Carolina's front office, known for its analytical approach to player evaluation, sees Kakko as a prime candidate for development into a more consistent offensive contributor while capitalizing on his solid defensive skills.

The Hurricanes could reportedly consider leveraging Kakko's RFA status with a potential offer sheet or trade, possibly involving a three-year deal, as noted by Fitzsimmons.

This move aligns with Carolina's strategy of bolstering their roster with high-upside players who can make immediate and future impacts.

Over his five-year NHL career, the 23-year-old has recorded 57 goals and 60 assists for 117 total points across 300 games played.
