When the Boston Bruins defeated the Maple Leafs again in the first round, Keefe was clearly on the hot seat. It was another disappointing playoff run for the Maple Leafs, so seeing them make a change behind the bench is not surprising in the slightest.
Keefe spent a lot of time with the Maple Leafs' organization. He became the head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies before the start of the 2015-16 season. From there, he was promoted to be the Maple Leafs' head coach during the 2018-19 season after they fired Mike Babcock from the role.
Keefe had plenty of regular-season success as the Maple Leafs' head coach. In 349 games as the Maple Leafs' bench boss, he put together a strong 212-97-40 record. He also led the Maple Leafs to three consecutive 100-point seasons and led the club to their best regular season ever (115 points in 2021-22).
However, Keefe just could not lead the Maple Leafs on any significant playoff rounds, as the club won just one round in his five seasons behind the bench. Now, the Leafs are on the hunt for a new coach because of it.
Given Keefe's strong run with the Leafs, don't be surprised if he garners interest around the league.
