3 Potential Free-Agent Destinations for Vincent Desharnais

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais is set to hit the free-agent market on July 1. He was in and out of the lineup throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs and could be on the move this summer once the market opens.

Here's three teams who could be in on the towering defenseman via free agency:

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks are potentially losing Tyler Myers and are going to be on the market for a similar right-handed defenseman, and Desharnais would be a much cheaper option. While he doesn't have the same skill set as Myers, Desharnais is a big, physical presence who can help the Canucks penalty kill and bottom pair. The Canucks know Desharnais well and this familiarity could go a long way.

New Jersey Devils

Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald called his team 'vanilla' at the end of the season and look for the Devils to add some size and some grit this summer. Desharnais fits the bill perfectly as he'd bring his 6-foot-6 frame and over 135 hits to the Devils. He also blocked 122 shots and played over two minutes a night on the power play. Something the Devils could use more of next season.

Detroit Red Wings

The Red Wings are disappointed with what they got out of Justin Holl last season and could potentially be buying him out this summer, which is going to be opening a spot on their right side. Desharnais can play a very similar role to Holl and be much more physical on opponents, at a much cheaper cost. Even if Holl stays in Motown, the Wings will have some interest and Steve Yzerman has money to burn this summer so keep an eye on Detroit ahead of the draft and free agency.
