Insider: Huge Turn of Events Coming For Jake Guentzel In Carolina

The Jake Guentzel Drama in Raleigh has been a rollercoaster ride for all involved this offseason. As the campaign ended for the Carolina Hurricanes, it was thought that they were all-in on re-signing the star forward. But then came word recently that they were open to accepting a mid-round draft pick in return for Guentzel's negotiating rights ahead of free agency on July 1st.

Now comes another huge turn of events, as insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting the two sides seemingly have an agreement on an 8-year deal, though nothing is official as of yet.

"Sometime this morning, or last night, the belief is that Jake Guentzel had an ask for Carolina—not confirmed, but I believe is 8 (years) by $8 million," Friedman told Pat McAfee today.

"I think the Hurricanes have indicated that they will do that contract and now we're waiting to see if it gets hammered out."

Friedman indicates that other teams, like the Vancouver Canucks and Tampa Bay Lightning are standing by to pounce if the two sides can't hammer out the final details.

Guentzel was acquired by the Canes at the trade deadline from the Pittsburgh Penguins, and he more than lived up to his billing, with 25 points in 17 regular season games, and another nine points in 11 playoff outings.

We're all standing by to see if this becomes official.
