Insider: Vegas Golden Knights Will Be In On Mitch Marner

The latest Mitch Marner rumor to be swirling around is a juicy one. According to insider Elliotte Friedman, the Vegas Golden Knights will take their swing at the Toronto Maple Leafs' star playmaker.

Friedman speculated on the Golden Knights rumors on the Leafs Morning Take show with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill.

One of the things with Marner is that a lot of people suspect that Vegas will be around it. Because Vegas is just smart, they are around any good player. So I got people hypothesizing Shea Theodore and Logan Thompson deals to me, for example.

Vegas has certainly shown their willingness to make bold moves and blockbuster trades, as evidenced just this season by the acquisitions of Noah Hanifin and Tomas Hertl, in addition to other big names in recent years like Jack Eichel and Mark Stone. And with a Stanley Cup victory as recently as last year, they're still feeling the burn to get back there any way they can.

As for the Theodore and/or Thompson rumors, those would be massive moves, and of course, with the Leafs desperate for a new No. 1 d-man and a starting goalie, either one of those would make a ton of sense.

Friedman did wonder, however, if the arrival of new hard-nosed head coach Craig Berube in Toronto might make the Leafs re-think the idea of keeping Marner around, to see if the new system can turn him into the player they hope he can be. In addition, with his no-movement clause, Marner is in control of the situation.

"I think that unless they find a way to sell Marner on it, and that's not going to be easy, I think it's going into next season."
