Maple Leafs Rumors: Latest on Ilya Lyubushkin's Future
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a lot of free agents entering the 2024 NHL Offseason. Their roster could look pretty different during the 2024-24 season because of it.
An update has now been provided for one of their free agents, Ilya Lyubushkin. According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Maple Leafs have not started contract extension talks with the right-shot defenseman.
While the Maple Leafs and Lyubushkin have not started contract talks, that does not automatically mean that his time with the Maple Leafs is over. They still have roughly a month to get him signed to a new deal, if they are hoping to.
Lyubushkin, 30, appeared in 74 regular-season games this season split between the Anaheim Ducks and Maple Leafs, where he had eight assists, 176 hits, and a minus-11 rating. He then followed that up with a solid postseason, posting three assists and a plus-4 rating in seven games.
If the Maple Leafs do not get Lyubushkin signed to a new deal before July 1, he should get a good amount of interest in free agency. Teams always like big right-shot defensemen like him, so we will need to wait and see where he lands from here.
