Liljegren, 25, was one of the club's most notable restricted free agents heading into July 1, but they have now gotten him inked to his new deal. The right-shot defenseman has gotten a nice raise, as he carried a $1.4 million cap hit for the 2023-24 season.
Liljegren appeared in 55 games this past season with the Maple Leafs, where he had three goals, 23 points, 92 hits, and a plus-3 rating. Overall it was a pretty solid year for the 2017 first-round pick, as he tied his career high in points but did so in six less games.
Liljegren has created some chatter as a trade candidate, and it will be intriguing to see if things change on that front now that he has landed this nice two-year pact. There is a reason to believe that he still has not hit his full ceiling yet, and it will be interesting to see if he has a breakout year during the 2024-25 campaign after landing his new contract.
Liljegren has appeared in 196 career games over five NHL seasons with the Maple Leafs, where he has 14 goals, 51 assists, 65 points, 297 hits, nad a plus-38 rating.
