NHL Rumors: Erik Gustafsson To Draw Plenty Of Interest This Summer

Erik Gustafsson is poised to attract significant interest in free agency this summer following a productive season with the New York Rangers.

The 32-year-old defenseman tallied 31 points in 76 games, showcasing his offensive capabilities and skill as a puck-mover.

Despite his strong performance and valuable contributions, Gustafsson's current one-year, $825,000 contract with the Rangers is a bargain, but with the team facing limited cap space and various roster needs, bringing him back at an obvious raise might prove too challenging.

Known for his offensive prowess, Gustafsson's career has been marked by defensive inconsistencies, which have led him to play for seven different teams since his NHL debut in 2017-18.

Since the 2020-21 season, the 32-year-old has recorded 17 goals, 103 total points, a +7 plus/minus rating, 181 hits, and 205 blocked shots across 234 games played.

Nevertheless, his recent success in a high-profile market like New York has increased his value, making him an attractive option for teams in need of an experienced and affordable puck-moving defenseman.

Gustafsson is expected to command a one- or two-year deal worth up to $2.5 million annually, as noted by Lyle Richardson of Bleacher Report offering a blend of veteran presence and offensive skill without breaking the bank.
