Oilers Rumors: Latest on Leon Draisaitl's Future in Edmonton
The Edmonton Oilers have some major business to take care of this summer and this includes finalizing a contract extension for superstar Leon Draisaitl.
The 28-year-old star forward is set to enter the final season of his contract in 2024-25, where he'll earn $8.5 million against the cap. His next deal could come in significant higher annually, potentially reaching $12-13 million.
The Oilers are a bit of a mess at the moment as Ken Holland appears to be set to leave for the Chicago Blackhawks, meanwhile Draisaitl enters the offseason knowing he'll likely be receiving an offer at some point.
One things for sure, he'd love to stay - "I'm gonna give you the most boring answer here. I'm obviously gonna sit down with my agents here and talk to the Oilers and see what their plan is, see what our plan is, and just go from there. Obviously I haven't had any time to really think about it, it wasn't on my mind a lot lately. It's just something that's gonna take a little bit of time to figure out what I want, what the Oilers want, what everyone wants. I love being an Oiler more than anything."
Chris Johnston on Insider Trading says it seems like the Oilers and Draisaitl are on the same page, Oilers don't want to allow Draisaitl get to free agency, Johnston doesn't think they will allow that to happen. Oilers will deal with their UFAs first then get to Draisaitl.

The Oilers have several free agents set to hit the open market on Monday including Warren Foegele, Adam Henrique, Connor Brown, Mattias Janmark, Corey Perry, and Vincent Desharnais. Look for a couple of new additions as well as the Oilers will look to upgrade for next season and worry about Draisaitl's extension in the near future.
