Report: Ottawa Senators in Advanced Trade Talks
Ottawa Senators general manager Steve Staios has been busy so far this offseason and all the hard work is slowly coming to fruition. Staios is reportedly very close to completing a trade and is in advanced dialogue with a number of teams.
Staios recently spoke with Senators insider Bruce Garrioch and admitted there's lots of chatter right now on the trade market "There's lots of dialogue right now. Yeah, there are some areas where you have to look at. You have to look at that, at the time, if the opportunity presents itself, but I think, in general, we're looking to improve in all areas."
Jakob Chychrun continues to be a prime trade candidate, which is something he's likely used to hearing by now. Chychrun has one season left on his contract at $4.6 million and could fetch significant return for Staios and the Senators. Ottawa has Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot signed long term so they do need to allocate their resources appropriately as they are heavy on the left-side of their defense core.
Garrioch has already reported this summer that forward Mathieu Joseph was in play and available on the trade market. Joseph has two years left on his deal at a $2.95-million cap hit.
At it stands now, the Sens have $12.4 million in cap space and moving out Chychrun and Joseph could provide some more financial flexibility for free agency, which opens on July 1.
