TRADE: Sharks Acquire Jake Walman From Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have traded defenseman Jake Walman and a 2024 second-round pick in exchange for future considerations.

The Sharks have made it known that they are looking to improve their blueline, and they have done just that by adding Walman. The 6-foot-1 defenseman has quietly blossomed into an impactful blueliner since joining the Red Wings, and he should be just the same for the Sharks from here.

Walman had a career year for the Red Wings in 2023-24, posting new career highs with 12 goals to go along with 21 points. He also had an impressive 151 blocks, which is something that the Sharks certainly could use of from their defenders.

Besides landing a solid two-way defenseman who can handle top-four minutes, the Sharks have also picked up the 53rd overall pick of this year's draft. The Red Wings just acquired it from the Nashville Predators in today's earlier trade.

With the move, the Red Wings have freed up $3.4 million of cap space. Given how key of a defender Walman was for Detroit, it is apparent that they are preparing to make another splash elsewhere. Thus, they are a team to watch incredibly closely right now.
