Blue Jackets Rumors: 2 Names "Finalists" For Columbus' Head Coaching Vacancy

The Columbus Blue Jackets are nearing the conclusion of their search for a new head coach, with Dean Evason and Jay Woodcroft emerging as the top finalists, according to The Athletic's Aaron Portzline.

Todd McLellan, initially considered a frontrunner, is no longer in contention due to contract negotiation issues, narrowing the field to Evason and Woodcroft.

Both candidates bring significant NHL coaching experience and distinct coaching styles that could benefit the Blue Jackets.

Dean Evason previously served as the head coach of the Minnesota Wild for parts of five seasons, achieving a .639 points percentage, the 12th-best all-time among qualified coaches.

Known for his disciplined approach and ability to develop young talent, Evason led the Wild to four postseason appearances before his tenure ended after a challenging start to the 2023-24 season.

Jay Woodcroft, who coached the Edmonton Oilers for parts of three seasons, boasts a .643 points percentage, the eighth-best in NHL history for coaches with at least 100 games.

Woodcroft's strategic acumen and offensive creativity helped the Oilers reach the 2022 Western Conference Final, though he was let go following a rough start to the 2023-24 campaign.

As the Blue Jackets aim to solidify their leadership behind the bench, the decision between Evason and Woodcroft will likely hinge on the organization’s vision for the future and how they plan to build around their core players.

Evason’s emphasis on structured play and defensive solidity could provide the stability the Blue Jackets need, while Woodcroft’s offensive-minded approach might energize the team’s attack and boost their scoring capabilities.
