Blue Jackets Sign Sean Monahan To Five-Year Deal

The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a significant addition to their roster by signing center Sean Monahan to a five-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $5.5 million, as reported by TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

Monahan, 29, brings a wealth of experience and scoring ability to the Blue Jackets, having played key roles with multiple teams over his career.

He recently concluded the 2023-24 season with the Winnipeg Jets, where he was acquired from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for two draft picks. During his stint with the Jets, Monahan tallied 13 goals and 11 assists in 34 regular-season games and contributed one assist in five postseason games against the Colorado Avalanche.

Monahan's overall performance for the 2023-24 season was impressive, as he amassed a total of 26 goals and 33 assists for 59 points across 83 games split between the Canadiens and the Jets. This marked his highest production since the 2018-19 season.

Drafted sixth overall by the Calgary Flames in 2013, Monahan has been a consistent point producer throughout his career, hitting the 30-goal mark three times and the 50-point mark six times. His career totals include 244 goals and 538 points in 764 games, making him a valuable veteran presence on any team.

The Blue Jackets, who finished last season with a 27-43-12 record and 66 points, are looking to improve their standing in the Eastern Conference.

Adding a seasoned player like Monahan, who has a proven track record of high production and experience, is a strategic move to bolster their offensive capabilities and provide leadership to a team aiming for a turnaround.
