New Jersey Devils Re-Sign Young Goaltender Nico Daws

The New Jersey Devils made a huge offseason deal to shore up their goaltending with the trade for Jacob Markstrom. They also dealt for a solid 1B last season in Jake Allen. But that doesn't mean that they're not interested in keeping young goalie prospect Nico Daws in the organization.

Today they've re-signed him to a two-year extension.

Daws, 23, was a restricted free agent, coming off his entry-level contract. His new deal will pay him an average annual value of $812,500, which is a downturn from his $925,000 AAV on his ELC. For 2024-25 it's a two-way deal, $775,000 at the NHL level and $350,000 at the American Hockey League level, while it reverts to a one-way deal in 2025-26 at $850,000.

Daws got into 21 games for the Devils this past season, posting an .894 save percentage and a 3.15 goals-against average. With the Utah Comets of the AHL, in 10 starts, he recorded an .890 Sv% with a 2.89 GAA. He has a 2.68 GAA and .906 Sv% at the AHL level in 64 career games.

The highlight of his season this past year was setting the record for the most saves by an NHL goaltender in an outdoor game, as he turned aside 45 of 48 shots against the Philadelphia Flyers in a 6-3 win on Feb. 17th, giving the Devils their first ever outdoor game victory.

The 6’4”, 205-pound netminder was coming off hip surgery last season, and now is a full year removed, ready to move forward with his new contract.

Daws was selected in the 3rd round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
