Byfield gets $31.25 million in security, plus a mid-term deal to cash in bigger next time around. Intriguing deal for both sides. Eight years would have been quite expensive.
Standing at 6-foot-5, Byfield's unique combination of size and skill has always hinted at his potential, and the Kings' patience is paying off.
His impressive performance last season placed him among elite company, as he became only the third Kings player in the last 20 years to score 20 goals in a season at age 21 or younger, joining Anze Kopitar and Alex Frolov.

Byfield's contributions extended into the playoffs, where he added four assists in five games.
Byfield is expected to play a significant role alongside Anze Kopitar on the top line, transitioning into a key center role as Kopitar's career winds down.
The five-year term of the contract helps keep the cap hit manageable while securing one year of his unrestricted free agent rights.
