Lightning Sign J.J. Moser To Multi-Year Deal

The Tampa Bay Lightning got a bit of business done today as the team has signed J.J. Moser to a two-year deal worth $3.375 million AAV.

Moser will once again be a RFA after the two years have completed and the expectation is that he is the fourth/fifth d-man on the Lightning next season. The 24-year-old was acquired as part of the trade that sent Mikhail Sergachev to Utah in order to free up some space and rework the defense a bit.

Moser has potential and served as the number two defenseman to Sean Durzi last season on an inexperienced d-core. He will have more experienced and much better players to play behind in Tampa Bay in 2024-25 as he could be on his strong side (left) behind Victor Hedman and Ryan McDonagh or on his off-side playing with one of them. The second option is less likely, but the hope is that the two years Moser signed for will see him progress well and take a top-4 role in the future.

Moser logged 20:34 of ice time last season and is coming off a five-goal, 26-point campaign. He isn't counted on offensively by any means, but he can contribute having put up seven goals and 31 points the season prior. The young d-man will block shots and deliver hits. This is a low-risk deal and a necessary one if the Lightning are hoping that the defense will be better this coming season.
