NHL Rumors: Trade Coming For The Blues?

The St. Louis Blues face a potential trade scenario to address their crowded blueline following the recent signing of veteran defenseman Ryan Suter.

With Suter's addition, the Blues now have nine defensemen on NHL contracts, including Colton Parayko, Nick Leddy, Torey Krug, Justin Faulk, Matthew Kessel, Tyler Tucker, Scott Perunovich, and Pierre-Olivier Joseph.

General Manager Doug Armstrong has hinted that a trade could be on the horizon to alleviate the logjam and balance the roster for the upcoming season.

Torey Krug frequently emerges as a trade candidate, especially after the Blues' unsuccessful attempt to move him to the Philadelphia Flyers last summer, according to Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic.

However, Krug's full no-trade clause, which remains in effect until July 2025, complicates potential trades.

A source close to Krug indicated he is not willing to waive his no-trade clause, making a move more challenging. Despite this, Armstrong might explore creative solutions, including placing Krug on waivers, though it's uncertain if any team would claim him, as noted by Rutherford.

As the offseason progresses, the Blues' need to balance their roster remains a pressing issue. Trading younger, less expensive players like Tucker or Joseph doesn't align with the team's long-term strategy, making seasoned defensemen more likely trade candidates.

Suter’s presence provides depth and experience, potentially filling any gaps left by a future trade and supporting the development of younger players within the organization.

Armstrong's decision on managing the defensive surplus might not materialize until closer to training camp or the preseason, leaving the situation unresolved for now.
