Patrik Laine Cleared To Return; Trade Talks Pick Up

Patrik Laine had a very troublesome season, on all fronts, this past year. From an early-season healthy scratch which he called "the most embarrassing moment" of his career, to asking for a trade, to winding up in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program for a six-month stint. The good news is that he is doing well and has now been cleared to return from the program.

Next up, trade talks will be heating up, as the Blue Jackets will look to give the former No. 2 overall pick (2016 NHL Entry Draft) the fresh start that he has requested. According to GM Don Waddell, several NHL clubs have expressed interest in Laine, but all want to speak with the player first. Now that he is out of the assistance program, that process can begin.

Waddell, however, says he won't be just giving him away. "We know Patrik’s feelings and if we can find the right fit, certainly we will do that. But, if not, we’ll have to just deal with it.” That is, Laine could still begin the season in Columbus if Waddell isn't happy with the return he can garner.

The 26-year-old forward is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, which could complicate matters until teams are assured of his medical status. In addition, he has a limited 10-team no-trade clause.

Laine was limited to just 18 games and nine points (six goals) in the 2023-24 campaign, and his three years in Columbus just haven't gone the way he or the team would have liked. However, he was a point-per-game player the previous two years in Ohio, playing only about 55 games per season, so with full health, he could be a huge get for a team looking for some offense.
