Proposed Flyers Trade Would Send Travis Konecny Out West

This past season, when top prospect Cutter Gauthier made it clear he wanted out of the Philadelphia Flyers organization, the team made the best of it, swapping him to the Anaheim Ducks for former No. 6 overall pick Jamie Drysdale.

Now, if one proposed mock trade became reality, the Flyers could be on the other end of that equation, pouncing on a top prospect who wants out of another organization.

Brotherly Puck has solicited trade ideas for the team, and came up with this intriguing one, which would send the team's top scorer Travis Konecny to the Winnipeg Jets in return for the disgruntled prospect Rutger McGroarty.

Philadelphia Flyers Receive:

  • Rutger McGroarty, 1st-Rd pick (#14), 2022 NHL Draft

Winnipeg Jets Receive:

  • Travis Konecny (50% – $2.75M – retained)
  • Scott Laughton
  • 2nd Round Pick, 2025

The Jets have been put in a tough position to have to move McGroarty, but there was an obvious difference of opinion about his readiness for NHL action that has caused the rift in his relationship with the organization. With this proposed trade, they would recoup a first-line caliber player in Konecny, 27, who's scored over 30 goals the past two consecutive seasons. He is eligible for an extension this summer, which the Flyers have been working on, to no avail as of yet.

The Jets also get another center whose name has been on the rumor mill all year, in Scott Laughton, who has two more years left at a $3 million cap hit. They also receive a nice draft piece, in a second-round pick next year.

The Flyers get an exciting young prospect in McGroarty, and about $6 million saved in cap space. McGroarty was the 14th pick in the 2022 Entry Draft, and soared up the prospect ranks even more after his 2023-24 season in which he posted 52 points in 36 games with the University of Michigan, with a plus/minus rating of +17. At 20 years old, he'd be leading the next generation of Flyers forwards.

Who says no to this deal?
