Breaking: UFA Daniel Sprong Chooses New NHL Home

As the top remaining unrestricted free agent, Daniel Sprong's next move was on many teams' radars. Now, Sprong has agreed to a very team-friendly deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

It's a one-year contract, at a huge bargain rate of $975,000. He's coming off a $2 million one-year deal in Detroit, and AFP Analytics had projected him after the season as being able to pull in an AAV of over $4 million.

We reported on Friday that the Canucks had "high interest" in Sprong, and they've obviously worked hard over the past 24 hours at getting a deal done.

Sprong had broken through the past two seasons as a very underrated complementary scorer in the bottom six, posting 39 goals over that time, with 89 combined points, first with the Seattle Kraken in 2022-23 (21 goals) and then with the Detroit Red Wings this past season (18 goals). His 5-on-5 scoring-per-60-minutes over the past two seasons was surpassed by only 10 other players in the NHL. Sprong played just 12 minutes per night in accumulating those numbers.

The 27-year-old has a bullet of a shot, and may even find his way into the top-six with the Canucks after his recent success.
