Sharks Rumors: San Jose Linked To Several Defensemen

The San Jose Sharks are actively seeking to strengthen their blue line ahead of the upcoming NHL season.

Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now has linked several right-handed defensemen to the Sharks, highlighting the need for experienced blueliners to support their current lineup.

Despite the additions of Jake Walman and the reliable presence of Mario Ferraro, the depth and readiness of the rest of the defensive lineup remain uncertain.

With Matt Benning recovering from a serious hip injury and veterans like Jan Rutta and Marc-Edouard Vlasic better suited for bottom-pairing roles, the Sharks are exploring both the free-agent market and potential trades.

On the free-agent front, Peng mentions Tyson Barrie, John Klingberg, Justin Schultz, and Kevin Shattenkirk as possible targets.

However, concerns about their recent performances and injury histories make them less ideal. Barrie and Klingberg are known for their offensive capabilities but struggled last season, while Schultz and Shattenkirk's effectiveness has waned with age.

These players could still provide valuable veteran presence and experience, but the Sharks must weigh these factors carefully in their decision-making process.

In the trade market, Peng points to Cody Ceci from the Edmonton Oilers, Trevor van Riemsdyk from the Washington Capitals, and Zach Whitecloud from the Vegas Golden Knights as potential acquisitions.

Whitecloud stands out for his youth and potential to develop into a reliable second-pairing defender, making him an attractive option for the Sharks' future.

While Ceci and van Riemsdyk offer veteran presence and short-term contracts, their balanced play and leadership could benefit the Sharks immediately.
