Update On Contract Talks Between Jets & Rutger McGroarty

Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press recently provided an update on the contract standoff between the Winnipeg Jets and their 20-year-old prospect, Rutger McGroarty.

Drafted 14th overall, McGroarty has declined to sign an entry-level deal with the Jets, opting instead to return to the University of Michigan for the upcoming season.

He believes he is NHL-ready, while the Jets prefer he starts with their AHL affiliate to further develop his skills. This disconnect has led to tension, with McGroarty's NHL rights held by the Jets until August 2026.

Despite the standoff, the Jets are not inclined to trade McGroarty for a minimal return.

McGroarty's decision to return to college is seen as a strategic move to enhance his value, both to the Jets and on the trade market.

Multiple trade discussions, including a close call with the Washington Capitals during the NHL Draft, have taken place but no deal has materialized.

The Capitals' center Connor McMichael was mentioned in potential trade chatter, though a move seems unlikely given McMichael’s affordable contract and Washington’s cap situation.

The Jets remain hopeful of mending their relationship with McGroarty, recognizing his value.

His performance in the NCAA this season will be closely watched, as it could either solidify his place in the Jets' future plans or increase his trade value significantly.
