3 Detroit Red Wings Who Will Regress In 2024-25
The Detroit Red Wings are thinking playoffs or bust. They have the team and personnel to do it, but some aspects of their roster could hold them back. The season depends on the good players being good and more positives than negatives for the questionable areas of the team. While some players will get better, three in particular are bound to regress this season.
Patrick Kane
Patrick Kane is still a very good player and it seems like he has been around forever playing at such a high level. He came off a big injury last season and put up 20 goals and 47 points in 50 games. This is the closest he has come to a point-per-game since 2021-22 where he did so in nine of the 10 seasons prior to that. Kane isn't getting any younger and his line isn't spectacular either. It was the first time scoring at a 33-goal rate since 2019-20 as well, so a few things will have to be at their best at age 36 for him to not regress a little bit this season.
Cam Talbot
Cam Talbot had a very up and down season with the Los Angeles Kings in 2023-24. He started off very hot, cooled off to the point where he went ice cold and went 0-6-2 with a 4.27 GAA and .873 SV% in January, then bounced back nicely as February rolled around. While he finished the season with a 27-20-2 record to go along with a 2.50 GAA and .913 SV%, he and the Kings got steamrolled in the playoffs. Talbot posted a 5.30 GAA and .861 SV% in three starts, allowing 16 goals. He shouldn't be a starter playing over 50 games this season with multiple goalies in the mix. He was seemingly the only option for half of the season with the Kings.
Alex Lyon
While Alex Lyon was a great success story last season for the Red Wings and almost helped them sneak into the playoffs, he is a career backup who hadn't played more than 15 games in a season in his career and he'll be 32 years old this season. He is a great goalie to have, don't get me wrong, but he started 43 games last season and went on a strong and unexpected run, posting a 3.05 GAA, .904 SV%, and a 21-18-5 record. He started to slip by the end of the season and he likely won't be starting anywhere close to over half the games for Detroit this season.
