3 Edmonton Oilers Who Will Regress In 2024-25

There is no reason to think the Edmonton Oilers are going to take a step back after losing in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final last season. This is a very good team that made some interesting additions to shuffle things around a bit. With that, there are bound to be a few players who regress, especially after some offensive seasons put together by some Oilers in 2023-24.

Zach Hyman

In Zach Hyman's first three seasons with the Oilers, he has continued to break his previous career high in goals. He scored 27 goals, 36 goals, and most recently, 54 goals. That is where it is going to peak. That high of a total was the result of a 18.6 shooting %. Though the Oilers' power play will still be as dangerous as ever and Hyman will be on either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl's wing, 35-40 goals is much more realistic for the hard working winger.

Derek Ryan

Derek Ryan showed signs of really slowing down last season and he will be 38 years old before the end of the year. There is a chance he even gets bumped from the lineup at times. His ice time dropped to just over 10 minutes per game and he went from 13 goals and 20 points to just five goals and 12 points. If he gets overtaken in his fourth line spot, there's no question the regression will be even more noticeable.

Corey Perry

Like Ryan, Corey Perry is at the end of his career. It is a little surprising the Oilers even brought him back for another go-around after he was a healthy scratch during the playoffs and seemed like he had slowed right down. Perry is a fourth line player at best at age 39, but he still may be able to be effective. His regular season wasn't as much of the issue as he scored eight goals and 13 points in 38 games for the Oilers. What was concerning is when the games got faster and tougher where he scored just one goal and recorded three points in 19 playoff games.
