3 New York Islanders Who Will Regress In 2024-25

The New York Islanders might be a bit better with Patrick Roy behind the bench the entire season, but not by a stretch. They have an aging group of players and a number of them had seasons which will be tough to replicate. That being said, most of the team is back and we'll check in on three players who will regress in 2024-25.

Kyle Palmieri

Kyle Palmieri proved he can still score at his age and on a below average team in goals for. He scored 30 goals for the first time since 2015-16 and it was only his second time doing so in his career. By recording 54 points, it was the first time he had even reached the 50 point mark in a season since 2018-19. Palmieri doesn't typically play a full season, but did in 2023-24. There are a lot of factors working against the veteran doing what he did offensively again.

Noah Dobson

Just because Noah Dobson might regress, doesn't mean he is any worse of a defenseman or won't bounce right back in the future and put up 70 points multiple more times. He started the season much better than he ended it in 2023-24, scoring 52 points in the first 49 games and just 18 in the final 30. He is young and has taken over the number one role for the Islanders, but not many d-men are able to put up 70 points in a season. He was only one of seven defensemen to accomplish it last season and the Islanders aren't particularly known for their offense. If Dobson starts this season the way he finished last season, he will have a drop-off in points.

Mike Reilly

With injuries to Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech, and Scott Mayfield, Mike Reilly got a very good opportunity to play in New York last season and did well. He helped offensively, but with a healthy team, that opportunity won't be there for him this season. He is a solid 6th/7th d-man to have, but after scoring six goals and 24 points in 59 games, Samuel Bolduc will either split the games with him or play even more.
