3 Players Entering Final Season With Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are desperately trying to take that last step and get into the playoffs. The team appears to be good enough to do so and they were right on the edge in 2023-24. That being said, Detroit also has a number of prospects breaking into the NHL very soon, forcing some of the less effective and older players out. Let's dive into three players who will be moved on from after the season due to these factors.

Jeff Petry

Acquiring Jeff Petry, even if it was for a reduced price and not a ton of cap space, wasn't the best move made by the Red Wings trying to get back into the playoffs. He had some great seasons in Montreal, but since then hasn't been the same player and is nearing the end of his career. Petry isn't that effective anymore and averaged under 20 minutes per game for the first time in his 14 year career, logging 18:48 per game. He is a free agent after next season and there are younger players to take his place in the lineup.

Ville Husso

Ville Husso's starting job was taken from his after struggles, missing time due to injury, and the play of Alex Lyon. Not only is Lyon still in town, the Red Wings also signed Cam Talbot to a two-year deal. There is a very likely chance that the team runs with three goalies, but what the future holds is a spot for Sebastian Cossa who is nearing the ability to take the step into the NHL. Husso will have to have a very good season in Detroit, and since leaving St. Louis, he hasn't shown the ability to do so, averaging a 3.22 GAA and a .895 SV% in the last two seasons.

Christian Fischer

As mentioned above, the Red Wings have a good prospect pool to still grab from. A few forwards are almost ready to take the next step and there will have to be some room on the roster for them. Jonatan Berggren is a full-time NHLer and should be given the chance to prove that this season. As for who's next, Marco Casper and Nate Danielson are going to make an impact sooner than later. This leaves someone like Christian Fischer, who scored five goals and 19 points in 79 games last season and is a UFA, on the outs. This is an easy transition for Detroit to make after the season.
