3 Players Entering Final Season With Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers may take a step back this season, but a lot of their team will probably be staying together. The group is relatively young and on the rise, but there will be some changes where the Flyers can. These are three players entering their final season in Philadelphia.

Scott Laughton

Scott Laughton has two years left on his deal at a very good $3 million AAV. There will continue to be lots of interest in him as a middle-6 center who can play up and down the lineup for a great cap hit isn't easy to find. Laughton finished sixth on the team in points last season, scoring 13 goals and 39 points in 82 games. While his ice time dropped 2.5 minutes per game from 2022-23 to last season, he kept up the physicality and kept up very close to his points pace. If the Flyers are on the outside looking in, a trade offer might be too good to turn down for someone likely not staying past the end of his contract anyways.

Cal Petersen

Cap dump Cal Petersen has proven he isn't an NHL goalie anymore and will be the third string in Philadelphia this season. He still has a $5 million cap hit for one final season and the Flyers will definitely be moving on from him. They took him to get assets because the team wasn't competing and had the space. There's no further reasoning behind keeping him around when the netminder hasn't played well.

Erik Johnson

The Flyers liked what they saw with Erik Johnson after acquiring him at the trade deadline last season. He only played 17 games to finish up the season and the Flyers missed the playoffs, but he is a solid 6th/7th defenseman to be in the mix in Philadelphia this season. He won't play all the games, but is a good safety net and veteran presence. Johnson will be 37 by the end of the season and his time is winding down.
