3 San Jose Sharks Who Will Regress In 2024-25

The San Jose Sharks are going to be better as a whole this season with a number of new additions and some young players improving. That being said, there are still going to be a few players who will regress from last season one way or another.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic

Marc-Edouard Vlasic has been on a steady decline for the last number of years after he got paid a big contract for his stellar play in his 20s. As the Sharks got worse, he stuck around on the contract that just kept looking worse and there was no use in buying it out. He will be on the third pairing, but if there were more options to bump him out of the lineup then that would happen.

Mikael Granlund

Mikael Granlund had a great return to form in his first season with the Sharks as he put up 12 goals and 60 points in 69 games. He was most definitely the MVP of the Sharks, who were a very bad team. As the undisputed first line center all season in 2023-24, that is going to change this season with much more competition. San Jose now have Macklin Celebrini and Alex Wennberg to give time to down the middle. Regardless of how lines turn out, Granlund's production should slip a bit with more mouths to feed this season.

Tyler Toffoli

Tyler Toffoli signed with the Sharks this offseason and will get top-6 time and time on the top power-play unit. Despite that, I don't think it is enough for him to repeat his goal-scoring from the last two seasons and reach 30 goals again. This is where I think we see the regression because the Sharks are a lot worse than the offense of New Jersey/Winnipeg last season and Calgary the season prior. Toffoli will still be a solid piece in San Jose, but if he's on a line with Celebrini, there are going to be some adjustments and success may not come all the time.
