TRADE: Canadiens Acquire Patrik Laine from Blue Jackets

The Patrik Laine sweepstakes have officially ended, as the star winger has been traded by the Columbus Blue Jackets with a 2026 second-round pick to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman Jordan Harris. The Blue Jackets will also not retain any of Laine's $8.7 million cap hit.

The Canadiens have been connected to Laine at times this offseason. It is understandable, as they certainly could use another star winger in their top six. Now, they have officially landed him, and he should be a big part of their roster from here.

Laine, 26, appeared in just 18 games this past season with the Blue Jackets, where he had six goals to go along with nine points. He entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program to prioritize his mental health. He has since exited the program and will now look to make a big impact with the Canadiens from here.

Laine will surely have a top-six spot with the Canadiens next season and should be put in a position to succeed. In his two previous seasons before 2023-24, he had 48 goals and 108 points combined in 111 games.

The Blue Jackets have landed a promising young defender in Harris from this move. He should now be a solid part of their blueline as they continue their rebuild. In 56 games this past season for the Canadiens, the Haverhill, Massachusetts native posted three goals to go along with 14 points.
