Breaking : Maple Leafs Make Huge Move with Auston Matthews

Auston Matthews is the present and future of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This much is not up for debate. The only swirling question was 'when will he be named the captain?' Now, that day has arrived. After five seasons with the 'C', veteran John Tavares is out, and Matthews will be taking on the role.

Matthews will be named the 26th captain in Toronto Maple Leafs history, per a report from TSN's insider Darren Dreger. He says the move will be made on Wednesday of this week, and is "part of the evolution of Matthews as a leader" for the team.

Tavares has reportedly given his full support for the transfer of power. Dreger says that JT was "heavily involved" in the process and has been in consultation with GM Brad Treliving. Tavares is heading into the final season of his 7-year deal.

Matthews will be entering the first year of his four-year, $13.25 million contract, and will be the highest-paid player in the NHL, for next season at least.

He was drafted with the No. overall pick in the 2016 draft, and is coming off a career-best 69-goal, 107-point season.
